Forged engine rebuild vvti cam timing problem

hi guys ive not been around for a while so i wana start with saying i hope i find you all fit and well

im coming to the end of my rebuild with forged pistons and rods (thanks nick) toda cams an valve spings along with other mods and ive a question about the timing with putting on the cam belt ,,i can see the timing marks ect same as in any engine but the vvti allows the cams to still move even with belt on as everything has been apart and cleaned so no oil for vvti solinoids to work which is worrying the hell out of me due to what ive spent lol !
is there a certain way of doing this ?

Not sure if Im getting the wrong end of the stick here (and might be because you have non standard cams) but the cam pulleys and timing is all done as usual and even with the VVTi system non of this can move with the belt on. The VVTi moves everything within the inside of the cam pulleys so that the camms are rotated to different positions relative to the pulleys and belt etc.

So to me as long as the VVTi and everything is still working as standard then the timing of the pulleys and belt etc should also be as it as standard, right?

out of interest have u a build topic as we all know im doing similliar thing, as for the timeing i think its just like a normal T/B change

hi,,,thanks for replys,
ok ...rocker cover off,,,in the middle of the cams theres a place you can hold them with a spanner,,if you do this and then with a large allen key in either of vvti pulleys you can hold cam still and move pulley about 35 degrees back and forth ,,,,,,should you not be able to do this ? are my vvti pullys knackered??
or if you like with cambelt on you can get hold of either cam with spanner and move it 35 degrees back n forth without the pulleys moving ....help!!

There should be a paint mark on the gear of the pulley and on the pulley itself. Line them up and that's it. The best way to check is to take off the bolt/cover thing on the front of the pulley, the Allen key bolt it's the one you take off to get the cam out. There's a recess cut out for the cam dowel to sit in, the recess bit should line up with the line on your cam gear which lines up with the mark on the head. If all that lines up your good to go

ok 1 thing what comp pistons and what toda cams will determine if you can run vvti at all

hiya,,,i know hoe to time it up i think maybe you missed my point but ty for replying,,,,im using eagle rods and low comp pistons from xnickx ,,have done research and am pretty much copying soiled so know i can run vvti still ,,i spoke to torque developments who are a tuning specialist and todas europe department who said both vvti cams work from oil pressure so no oil pressure as its all been apart nothing to hold pullys!..
its pretty much all back together now just spent 2 days rerooting wiring loom as going for a decluttered engine bay look . am going to do a post of build if anyones interested :D

need to look at cam boxes have forgot lol but 268in 264ex if my memory serves me correct ,,i did speak to toda before ordering

just brought a referb holset hx35 .i keep meaning to do a build thread but being a single dad of 2 boys in days get run ragged and come nights i just feel knackered lol ,,,

is he not usen a different turbo tho? are you getting it mapped any time soon? so i can see what turbo is like spool ect, i look it up on there website and says for a 5L unless im mistaken? im not sure can i trust an apexi with the things you here with them working n then not working n working again,

not sure how to help on pic bud

will be keeping an eye out

he is using a gt30 i beleve ,,your correct in saying a 5l but trust me matey the hx35 is a very competitive turbo for a 1.8 to a 5l and very reasonable to beat at the price ,,,they spool up very quick and are most commonly used on 2.5l or high reving 2l ...google it yourself or have a read on driftworks
the hx35 is good for 500bhp how much do you have to spend on a garret for that £1000 ? i got this hx35 reconditioned unit for 299!
i think i will get it remapped at torque developments thurrock but im gona have to run it in for 500 miles first and at moment i goto sort out return fuel line 1000cc injectors what afm to use ,any help there anyone??? an few other bits ,,oh and fit pair front recaros i got from type r :D
