Changing piston rings

Postby ManxTezza » Fri Sep 19, 2014 9:42 pm

Hi

I have had my Altezza checked in a garage because it has been smoking/burning oil. The mechanic has confirmed that the piston rings are worn out.

The question i have is can the 3S-GE engine be honed for new piston rings as i have been warned that some engines cannot and therefore wont run again even with the new rings?

Thanks for any help!

Yes it can be honed, it's just a standard cast iron block

Have been to check parts. There are two different sizes of piston rings. Is there any way of telling which size you need before you actually remove them? Also does anyone know what type of head bolts are used?

Pistons have to come out of the block to change rings, get a micrometer and measure away! Thats the true way to tell. On a side note, have you personally tested the compression to see if the rings are bad and not somethibg simple like valve seals? I wouldnt want to spend lots of money and still burn oil.... just saying
