Knocking/Creaking noise at front

Postby RS Tom-Hundred » Wed Jul 08, 2015 10:49 am

Noticed a slight knocking/creak from front (presuming) suspension on my Altezza.

Usually when Im coming to a stop on full lock (ready to reverse into car park space or onto the drive).

I jacked it up and checked for play anywhere but nothing obvious at all. The drivers side front tyre has got a fair bit more wear on the inside edge than the passenger side though so something isnt right.

I understand the Lexus IS200 has issues with bottom ball joints but also that the Altezza ones are slightly different (bigger?).

Could this be my issue or do you think I should be checking anything else?

If so, any of you guys know of good and decent priced source of new ball joints please? Do the likes of Euro car parts and motor factors do these or will I struggle?

Cheers :)

Any ideas or similar experiences?

I checked all the joints again last night and no excessive play in any but there are grease marks around the drivers side bottom ball joint like the boot has been leaking maybe, so for circa £37.00, Im gonna take a gamble on that and get one tonight. Hopefully it stops the noise and that will mean I can get laser tracking done and no more tyre scrub.

Is it a straight forward job to swap it and just a case of the bolts and the splitting of the two balljoints? (main and track rod)
I read a guide on how to do it but he was doing a bottom arm at the same time so hard to tell how much of that applied to just changing the bottom ball joint piece!

definetly lower ball joint...you will hear the creaking sound if u simply turn d steering side to side with the vehicle stationary...its a pretty easy job to do if you're handy with tools...

That's what I thought but could really do with a ball joint splitter (which I should be able to borrow at the weekend). I got the track rod ball joint split but the main one was being a bit of a bugger with the prising and wacking with hammer method so didnt get that one split last night! LOL

I did noticed that the rubber was split and so the grease had come from there so even if it doesnt turn out to be this then the ball joint needed replacing anyway :)

Blimey! Thats quite bad! The weird thing is that I cant get any play like that in mine but deffo was leaking from the looks of it so needed changing.

Hopefully I can split the joint tonight and get the new one on and will know straight away if the knock/creak noise has gone when I drive it!

I got the old ball joint split and the new part on last night but annoyingly after a short while of the test drive (where I thought it had gone) I realised the creak and knock is back and seems even worse! LOL

I had another look at the lower control arm and there seems to be movement in both sides

Im guessing this is not right? Can someone confirm please?

Is that fooked cos both sides are similar so although I initially thought both were same so no issue, Im now thinking both are bad?!

A member on the NZ club has suggested ruling out the sway bar and drop links by disconnecting them temporarily for a test drive to see if the noises go away. Can anyone advise or clarify the best joint to disconnect to do this please?

I'm presuming if I disconnect the anti roll droplinks from where they mount to the bottom of the strut/lower arm and then wire them up to the sway bar, before I try it on the test drive that should effectively disconnect them from everything?

Looking at the video you posted, i'd honestly suggest fitting new bushes.

TRD do replacement bushes and you only have to press them in. Saves on buying a new arm!
