This is a build thread for my newest daily driver. a 1999 Toyota Altezza RS 200Z.

it has 103,000 on the clock. and the previous owner did not care for him well. evidence of "Stance" and scraped lower panels. plus an obvious bump to the trans. which is currently dripping with trans fluid. never fear, Gojira is here, with tools, money, and favors to call in. :D
i will take more pics during the inspection tomorrow, to see how bad the shape is. but moving on.... i have been making preperations.

Thanks to the good folks at Autobacs, and some shop on ebay, the Audio is just waiting on a 2-din adapter fascia.

With a Carozzeria mp3/aux input head unit. 6" 3 ways from Clarion, and 6"/9" 5 ways also from Clarion. wires,adapters,and foams are ready to go in.my Rick Astley needs are taken care of.

And a trip to "Up Garage" yielded these sweet Tanabe sustec pro coilovers for $300 usd.

just to get the handling the way it should be, but anti-roll bars, strut tower bars, and suspension components are always on the list of parts i'm looking for.

so, i went to see my tire/wheel guy. said i need wheels for an Altezza. he says "lets look in the warehouse" 8)

Work VS "vf" 18x7 -45 front, 18x9 -38 rears. with a little tweaking, these will do the job. and i thought the way my fit dude put the tires on would be interesting for you guys. he's been doing this since the 80's.

he inflates the tires a little. then sees if it grabs right. note the insane rim width and 225 tire..

having no luck, i joke about gas and a lighter, he says no, i can do better. and pulls out a bicycle tube that's semi inflated. my eyes were glued to what he was doing next.........

He puts the Bicycle tube on the rim! between it and the tire sidewall! i am now more than curious...

so he then inflates the tire, and as the tire inflates and seals with the rim bead? the tube pops off leaving a perfect seal!!!!!

these are going to look awesome. and the kicker? this is the same guy who will help me insstall my coilovers for 2 six packs of beer! doing things right, and on the cheap. i sold some Gramlights i had from a gtr skyline, and used some fresh Hankook tires on a spare set of rims i had?? these Work Rims set me back $600 plus fitment. :D

next, the inspection that will determine what happens first with the toolbox.

Thats awesome man, I wish i could just pop down to up garage and grab a set of coilovers !! sweet wheels aswell they will look great on the altezza with a roll on the arches and a nice amount of lows and u got them for a unreal price !

although I want to keep this about the car. i think it would be fun to share with you all the daily doings of building a daily driver the way we do it here in Japan. so you can look forward to seeing greasy worshops, recycled parts shops, pics from Autobacs, and other places. plus pics of my friends doing what they do (while protecting their privacy) , with a little bit of background into why i seek their advice. so you can see a "Grass roots" style build, focused on the car. 100% JDM style. sometimes giving my guys free reign on what they want to do. it's an organic approach. and i honestly have no idea how it will develop. it depends on what parts are around, and how they fit together.

The only "new" parts on my mind are a Greddy turbo kit, and brakes. perhaps engine internals. otherwise, it's all hashed together from whatever i can find in scrapyards,friends, or resale shops. the custom work is the exciting stuff. the tecniques,the quality of workmanship, and creativity. from an older generation of racecar builders playing with tools on their own time. paid with beer and gratitude+ shop running costs.it's just pure fun. :wink:

Let me know if/when you replace engine internals and what standard stuff you have spare - depending what I find inside my noisey engine I might ask you to post them out to me to replace mine! :lol: LOL

i have been looking at JUN parts catalogs for cams, cam gears, and valvesprings. as a member said my boost would drop at higher RPM's but i will seek advice before spending...

so, when i first met my Engine guy. we got to talking and i was shopping for a turbo. there was a R34gtt making 650hp on his lift waiting for more upgrades. he says "Do you want the turbo that's on it??" (pokerface) sure, i'll take that if the guy doesn't need it.....

A HKS GT 30/40. turbo. with one seasons race use.

for $300!!!!!!!!! and a 46mm HKS Boost gauge that was in a random shop. for $60. all parts are included.
with a turbo kit. this will produce the power. and show me boost levels. with the 2-din stereo fascia, and 1 din of space left. i can use a HKS face plate that fits a 46mm gauge currently sitting on a shelf with old parts in my engine guys office. just i'll need to carbon wrap it to hide the old switch slots. but the boost guage will be just below my head unit.

Wow I would love to see how you and your friends do stuff over there in Japan so keep things coming..

About the Turbo, depending on how you want to use the tezza I think it might end up a little laggy down low with to much cfm's up high in the rev range. You definitely want to run forged internals and low compression with this bad boy as it will be tough to get this near the optimal flow range with standard internals running less than 14 PSI.
Our stock gearbox and drivetrain is good for about 300 ft- lb (or 400Nm in Europe) as some people say thats another thing to keep an eye on..

Would be a monster in the straight line in the top rpm range but would lag mid range torque for drifting and would be uncontrollable and laggy on racetracks I guess.

But thats only my two cents.. you engine mechanic might know better =)

yeah, i understand it's an overly large turbo. with potential for big power. and you are spot on with your assessment.
so the steps are,
1, turbo with a Greddy kit. and get it all working as a turbo car.
2,support upgrades, like a Power FC or hks F-con. injectors,oil cooler,etc
3,throw $3000 at the engine, for the top end parts from JUN, and stronger bottom end. - whatever i can find at a good price.
4,put on the badboy turbo. and see what it can do.
5, no doubt the mission would be really,really unhappy at this stage. so one from a Supra,Chaser,or Crown Athlete will work. - not ruling out a powerglide or lenco. :lol:
6,Make sure the Diff can hold it, (2way lsd) and the brakes can stop it (larger toyota items).

My car is not intended as a drift car, it is a street car that can hopefully pull a fast timeslip . while being ok for driving daily.
with my old car i was invited to participate in the local drag meets. and would like to take this one. to try legit racing.

moving forward slowly, i'm excited. :P

In for a penny in for a pound, you have the turbo now you may aswell start from there.

Going GReddy kit first will just cost you more (I know, I did it that way :p)

Maybe just buy the GReddy intercooler kit, then you can build a custom manifold for your turbo and run it on super asthmatic low boost (4-6psi) until you do the engine build.

Try to avoid having to do things twice.

You'll be surprised with high compression and vvti the turbo won't be as laggy as you'd think.

Plenty of different ways to achieve the same things and you have the right contacts to end up with a wicked machine in the end, will definitely bekeeping an eye on your build thread :)

Also another thing to note... Nissan gtr (r33-34) rear diff and axles fit pretty much straight swap if you are going for drag racing.
