removing battery with engine running?

Postby Tezzy » Thu Sep 10, 2009 7:49 pm

I need to get the supra started this evening and the battery has gone flat. Dont have jump leads.

I was going to throw the altezza battery into the supra to start it then swap them over with the engine running. will this do any harm to the supra disconnecting the battery when running?

alternator should keep it alive, same as a flat battery after jump start really, battery is only used for starting, alternator does the rest

The alternator will keep it running, but caution was advised about connecting jump leads between cars before. Didn't someone fry a an ECU doing that? Disconnecting the battery load could cause a voltage spike.

If you do need to do it, be very careful that you don't drop the positive lead onto the metal frame, or you will definitely be looking at a charred mess.

got my hands on a set of jump leads in the end, got it started with those 8)

The poles on the tezza battery were too big in any case for the supra clamps.

and managed not to fry anything. I think revving the car after its jumped is what causes the damage, it sends a surge back to the donor battery.

Spot on  Let it start and idle is safer, i personally prefer a push start option if i dont have a battery or booster pack to do it

Push start will only work if there is enough in the battery to power the injectors
