GXE10 1G-FE start then stall RESOLVED!

So I just signed up to ask about this and in the time it took to get activated I figured it out so may as well share it :)

Problem - engine starts then stalls after 1-2 seconds. Need to key off before it will fire again else only cranks.
Fault code present bad coil #4
Swapped coil with #3 and no change (apparently, 2nd hand info)
As such used scope to compare crank vs cam vs ignition vs injection
Found all to be present and correct
Notice when engine dies injection is being stopped
This model does not have an immobilizer
Hold key in start position once engine started to verify not bad ign switch (still stalls and continues cranking)
Think there must be some other input causing ECU to do this so scope every other possible input vs injection
Find nothing
Re-scan fault codes, apparently fault did move with coil
Replace suspect coil
IT RUNS!

Call me stupid, but what manufacturer in their right mind would kill an engine over a coil fault?! Oh I'm sorry, we don't want you to be able to drive home on your remaining FIVE cylinders, you're better off being stranded!
Lesson A) fix fault codes first then go looking
Lesson B) don't try and assume manufacturer logic then apply that logic :lol:

Thanks for the info.

I know the SXE and 3SGE engine also suffers from coil problems and the previous did one on mine and I've also done one during my ownership. Luckily the Altezza did run (albeit very badly!) with one dodgey coil so I limped it the 15miles home on 3 cylinders at least!
