Engine oil?

Postby RS Tom-Hundred » Tue Jan 13, 2015 12:57 pm

Im gonna do an oil change on the Altezza probably this weekend and trying to decide on oil to use.

Searches on here and other owners clubs advise various similar things mostly summerised by this quote:
"Factory fill is 5.1L of 10W-30 or 5W-30. Being a performance engine you want an oil meeting A3, B3, B4 or C3 spec, stay away from fuel efficient specs like A1, A5, C1 etc"

The car has been run on Fuchs Titan Supersyn F 5w30 by the previous owner, which I understand is actually for Ford but the specs sound decent in that it has the right spec though some say its A3 and some A5 rating? Also looked at the Fuchs Titan XTR that has got an A5 rating, which supposedly combines A3 performance and A1 fuel economy I understand?

Not sure whther to stay with the Supersyn F or go over to the XTR or something different?

Any recommendations welcome but ideally something that comes in a 5 litre can so I should have just enough to do oil change in the car and dont really wanna buy odd 1 or 2 litres ones to make a change! LOL Cheers :)

I use 5w40 and a genuine filter. If I use 5w30 it will burn more

Yeah, tell me about it mate - I've read loads and I'm mostly veering towards staying with 5w30 purely cos its been run on that already and doesn't burn/use any.

Want to go for a decent one and change it often rather than massively high end one and risk not wanting to change it so often cos of cost! LOL The spec on the XTR is very similar to the 300V with regards to the viscosities (actually closer to 10 at running temp!) but cant find them for the Supersyn F.

For info here's the stats I found:

300 V at 100° = 11 mm²/s
XTR at 100° = 10.2 mm²/s

300 V at 40° = 65 mm²/s
XTR at 40° = 57.1 mm²/s

VI number of 300 V = 162
VI number of XTR = 169

These figures are looking very good, I am running 300V 5w30 since 09/2014 and engine didn't burn noticeable amount of oil on dip stick, still 3/4.

I'd say XTR oil will do 100%

I personally don't rate motul oils at all, they did very poor in an engine oil comparison test I read. But 5w30 will be sound if it doesn't burn much stick with it

xW30 is recommended for vvti operation. So keep that in mind when running thicker.

That XTR looks a bit too thin. I've found anything over 11 cSt @ 100°C runs best in the 3SGE. Oils that meet A3 & C3 are over 11 & have a HTHS of 3.5
I'm running Mout 300V 5W30 also. It's brilliant oil. Just had my last batch tested after 8K km & it's holding up fine. Being a race oil it shouldn't really last this long but Motul don't do things by halves.
You can't compare Ester (300V) with POA or Hydrocracked synthetics it's a totally different beast.

Cheers for the reply :)

Bugger! I bought a load of the XTR in the end butr i havent done a change yet as I have had this to deal with viewtopic.php?f=9&t=14107
If you have a spare 10mins to look through this thread and can help, Id appreciate any feedback.

When I do get the engine sorted/fit a new engine(!), will the XTR be ok to use or do you strongly discourage it or think it will cause damage?

Asda have had Castrol Edge 5w-30 on offer in store recently, think I paid £30 per 4l pot. But I know oil is the least of your worries at present!

I've been running gulf competition 5w-40 cos it was free and it's actually not too bad. Havent done huge milage on it yet but it's staying very clean so far and doesnt really burn much off. It hasn't really moved in the last 2k miles
