Squeaking Noise?

Postby Sask » Sun Oct 26, 2014 1:11 am

My Altezza has weird squeaking type noise on cold idle, doesn't happen all of the time but it is definitely noticeable. Seems to be separate from the annoying thrust bearing noise, doesn't matter if the clutch is in or out. I took a video of it under the car behind the front wheels. I'm a mechanical noob so I really have no clue but anyone have any ideas?

Start the car and carefully spray some wd40 on the ancillary belts without getting too close incase you loose your hand. Mine does that sometimes it's a worn belt and the oil makes the noise go away. If wd fixes the noise, keep spraying it a little when it squeaks and get a new belt. The video won't play so I'm just guessing

Definitely not belts, they were just replaced a week ago. The sound is coming from somewhere further to the back/lower down. Clutch/flywheel area?

That sounds horrendous! Sounds a bit like a flywheel, my mates mx5 had a very similar noise and it was a warped flywheel. May be worth doing a check for a slipping clutch just to rule that out

I tested it a bit today.. not aggressively but the clutch doesn't seem to be slipping. Could it be the pilot bearing? I think it matches all of the symptoms.

Does the noise change as you turn the steering wheel? Steering rack and power steering lines are in that area as well. Just strange that it only happens on cold idle, pilot bearing would make that noise constantly regarding of operating temp?

I was wrong when I said that, I only first noticed it on cold start up but now that I'm listening for it I hear it more after it's warm. I think you're on to something though.

Thats why I mentioned the PAS. Because that sound immediately made me think of it. Used to get it pretty often. You mentioned that you changed the belts as well? Tensioned the belt up enough?

I didn't do the belts, a Toyota tech did, although I wish I had done it myself now. I had another look today for where the noise is coming from and looked at some diagrams afterwards. I'm thinking it's the pcv valve. I'll probably go to the dealership today or tomorrow to confirm.

Yea Defo sounds like air in the pas system. But it would change pitch if you went full lock and held it. Does it change when you rev?

Do you want to reduce the noise? then this jammer blocker can help to cut down the signal.

Just to update this, the noise has larger gone away on its own, definitely clutch related though if i kick the clutch a couple of times when the car is stopped in neutral it goes away. Clutch is way too soft anyways so I'll be replacing it soon.
