Recommend oil for Beams RS200

Postby JordanCoupe » Sat Oct 12, 2013 7:01 pm

Thanks to xnickx on here il soon have most of what I need to give the engine in my car a complete overhaul so I'm looking for recommendations on what oil to use in it? If anyone can point me in the right direction it'd be hugely appreciated thanks.

10-40 or 40 would be too thick?

Toyota recommend is 5w30.
Why complain when nobody listens?

They run best on 5w30 / 10w30. Just be aware a lot of the newer 5w30/10w30 are designed for fuel efficiency, you don't want this. Mobil1, Castrol Edge, Shell Helix Ultra, Motul 8100 are recommended

10w/40 is what I use but this upcoming oil change I'm going to 5w30 which is the performance upgrade to 10w/40 so to speak but definatly as E910 said make sure it's not the eco oil as that is way too thin even though it stats the thickness it's designed for modern engine and they will state what the api approval is on the back

i use to always think that hen using thinner oil such ad 5-30 10-30, it would be easier to damage internal components on driving errors. example: connecting rod bearings? also doesn't thinner oil makes engine louder? i am not sure of this can someone please confirm and explain it to me? thanks

E910 knows his stuff...
yes a much too thin (low viscosity) oil can mess up the bearing clearance and hinder lubrication...

they confuse me more, so really 10w-30 is really better as covers a wider range of temperature, being in uk this year temp has been well over 10 deg and hasn't dropped below
-20
but how can the same oil in different engine go to higher temp?
so really 10w-30 would be best all rounder

An oils ability to protect comes down to the quality of the base stock as well as the overall viscosity. As an example Mobil1 5w30 will protect your engine 10x better than say Castrol Magnatec 10w40 ever could. Same can be said for noise, a thicker oil will only mask it, better flowing oil will reduce it.
Have a read up on the effects of shearing >> http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/effects-of-shearing/
When you've got a spare min >> http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/

Most Japanese & American engines have been designed to run on 10w30 since the 90's & modern ones spec 0w20 these days. All using a thicker oil than specified in a standard engine does is increase drag on internal components reducing efficiency & low end power/torque
