Cant get 5th gear ??

Postby wullie_trd » Tue Jan 03, 2012 6:30 pm

Just got the car serviced today and got gearbox and diff oil changed ......... had no probs with the gearbox before, but now that the oil has been changed i cant get the car into 5th gear ....

Has anyone had similar issues or have an idea of what might be the problem??

Any help or info much appreciated!

Have no problems with any other gear , all feels smooth!

what weight oil was in it before and after service?

I have had issues with my w58 gearbox when using synthetic aftermarket gear oil. Gears were knotch and hard to engage. i switched to redline synthetic mtl and felt like i got a whole new transmission!

was the gearbox grinding at all going into any gears beforehand? i had a similar problem before and when we split the box to have a look there was damage to one gear so when the oil drained metal filings had rested in bad places!

this is probably only worst case scenerio though

He did say that when the oil was drained there was small filings of metal in the oil.

Didnt have any grinding beforehand ..... maybe a bit knotchy when it was cold but when it warmed felt great.

Its funny you should say that though ..... one of my other mates had suggested the same thing.

If this is the case , wot you think i should do ??

Would draining the oil and and replacing maybe shift it ? or does it need opened up ?

i would change the gear oil again to a factory toyota manual transmission oil or a redline afttermarket oil. I would not use any other oil. if the shop is not half bad i do not see how they could have messed up a gear doing a routine fluid change!!

Yip metal filings....

The only real way out is to dismantle the box...

Or cross your fingers and hope that an oil flush or two gets rid of it...

Still it's the cheaper of the two options...

Think i might just try flush it a few times ...... hopefully this works.

If not might try different oil .. or open it up .........

Begining to wish i had just left it alone. Knotchy when cold i could handle, this is just a pain in the ass! :x

Oh yeh...

I also heard that if your clutch isnt fully releasing the gears can grind

But i dont know if that applies here...

* UPDATE*

Car into garage this morning .... tried flushing a few times, but no joy.

Getting it stripped out for a look tomorow.

If i need a new box where would i source one? no chance of gettin one out scrappies over here.

I read a post on here talking about the is200 being the same ... just the bell housing is different .... Can anyone confirm this?

Also what sort of money will a box cost ?

Cheers

You should be able to get a any over here (Ireland) handy enough but you would have the shipping cost would you be able to even buy the gears it would take away from the bulk of load?

I think there was box for sale on here somewhere have a look in the for sale section?

Sure there is still an IS200 down at U Pull It in Inverkeithing mate, was a manual box and was still intact last time I saw it.
