Tezzaworld February Double Feature

Ok so, let’s go back 4 or 5 years, times were good every young man and girl in Ireland was driving Jap Imports from Integra Type R’s to Civics, Glanzas, Levins, the list goes on. For those who wanted to be different, for those who wanted comfort and RWD, for those who wanted a great all rounder there was only one car that ticked all the above boxes, that car for most was the Altezza. Here we have what I would call 2 examples of mint Altezzas, 1 modified and 1 standard enough.

What made you pick an Altezza as your car?
I spotted a yellow modified one in GMIT in 2006, thought it was savage. So in 2008 I was going to buy either an Audi A4 or a BMW 3-series coupe but the mileage was high on all the cars I looked at. So I started looking at is200s and Altezza's. I saw my Altezza online on St. Paddys day, it was reasonably priced at the time and the mod’s really caught my attention. I went to look at it and put a deposit on it the next day and have never looked back.

Did you know much about altezza's before you got one?
I knew they were more powerful than IS200's and that they were 4cylinder not 6cylinder like the IS200 but that’s about it. Some so called 'experts' tried to tell me Altezza’s made around 90bhp with a few mod’s more than an IS200.

Were did you get your altezza?
Dublin

How long have you had your altezza?
It will be 3 years in March

How much you have spent on the car?
With the current look, about €1500

Did you buy your altezza modified or is it your own work?
Modified but I added my own touches to the car to make it my own

If it’s your own work, where do you get your ideas?
The black roof would have came from euro cars and I like carbon so added small bits, the gold wheels just appeared for sale, they caught my attention and I wanted to get away from the black wheel silver lip that were so popular .

Why did you modify the car?
Hate cars that look the same, also it’s a lot easier to find it in the car park now.

Whats your favourite thing about the car?
The Vertex wings, one of the reasons I bought it, they really made the car stand out and they go with the lines of the car.

Is there anything you don’t like on the car?
There’s not much about the car I don’t like BUT the lack of a turbo for extra power and the standard rear bumper is too plain, was thinking of adding the charge-speed bumper and having the lower half black.

What part of the car would you like to modify next?
Probably the rear bumper since the front one will need a respray because of stone marks

Where do you get your parts?
I get most of my parts from Nick, he’s the site trader and a Legend.

Does price or quality make a difference when choosing parts for the altezza, like if its cheaper to get the same part from Japan or USA than here would you buy it?
All the maintenance parts I have got so far have come from Nick in New Zealand, quality is also important and Nick is The best for all the parts I need.

Have you ever got your car dyno'd? If so where did you get it done and what was the result?
TDP 201.7bhp and 165 ft/lb with an induction kit
Westward 206.9bhp and 209nm with standard airbox

Does your other half know how much money you have spent on the car?
Majority of girlfriends have no interest in cars so they don’t know. At the end of the day it’s my car and I could spend the money on worse things.

What is the worst mod you have seen on an Altezza?
Pink engine bay.

What is your fave modified car?
Top secret supra

Brians (MooMoo’s) Altezza really is a modified Altezza that stands out from all other Altezzas from its aftermarket Mirrors, Re-trimmed Interior, Colour Coded engine bay and its carbon door pillars, it does stand out . Brian really has taken the time to think through each mod that he has added to his car. Brian really is a Die Hard JDM fan.

What made you pick an Altezza as your car?
I have always liked the style of the IS200, its subtle, it’s not over the top and I had seen a few Altezza’s around the place which just looked a great deal nicer without the badges that the IS200 have and then one day I was on the motorway building up speed in my previous car and 2 Altezza’s went flying past me, I tried to keep up with them but not a chance, I decided then I wanted one.

Did you know much about Altezza's before you got one?
Not a huge amount, I done a small bit of research into them when I was buying them.

Where did you get your Altezza?
I got it off a guy from Laois who had bought it in from Japan.

How long have you had your Altezza?
I have it since April 2008; nearly 3 year’s now and still loving it.

How much you have spent on the car?
God I don’t know, I would say €3000 - €4000 most of that spent on maintenance.

Did you buy your Altezza modified or is it your own work?
I got it standard and I just added a few small touches to it. I have added a radio, got the wheels refurbished, painted the calliper/drums, other than that is just maintenance of the car. I would try and do as much of it I can myself but don’t really have a place to work on the car safely.
Most the work I do is cleaning the car, I would love to have a shed but have to do it all on my drive way.

If it’s your own work, where do you get your ideas?
Not many modifications that I have done to the car, I got the coilovers with the car and the interior is from the factory. I’m going to keep the car as standard as possible, it a fairly unique car and I would like to keep it that way.

Why did you modify the car?
The modifications I have done so far are all in my eyes to improve the appearance of the car.

What’s your favourite thing about the car?
I love the interior of the car, I got it with a very good spec and of course you have the comfort and performance. It’s as comfortable driving at 50mph as it is at 100mph.

Is there anything you don’t like about on the car?
The down side to the car is the insurance has gone through the roof recently. On the car itself there isn’t much I dislike about the car, maybe a bit more power, but its great all round car, I can’t see myself selling the car anytime soon, I enjoy it too much.

What part of the car would you like to modify next?
I’m hoping to get a new exhaust hopefully HKS Hi Power Silent and double din Head unit. I also have a strut brace on the way and I have to fit one of the radiator cooling panels I got from Robin on the site.

Where do you get your parts?
Nearly everything I have got so far has been through Nick on the site.

Does price or quality make a difference when choosing parts for the Altezza, like if it’s cheaper to get the same part from Japan or USA than where would you buy it?
Quality is first for me, but if I can get a genuine quality product from somewhere else cheaper I will go for that, but quality has to be number 1.

Have you ever got your car dyno'd? If so where did you get it done and what was the result?
Yes I did, at Track Day Performance in Wicklow, and the figure was 193.5 bhp from a car that’s the same as it was from the factory that’s pretty good.

Does your other half know how much money you have spent on the car?
No other half at the moment, maybe that’s why.

What is the worst mod you have seen on an Altezza?
Personally I don’t like to see the big L of a Lexus badge on an Altezza, I’m always trying to convince people that my cars not a Lexus.

What is your favourite modified car?
I really like the R34 Skyline GTR.

Darren’s Altezza is a true credit to him, a fine example of a well looked after, non abused example. While Darren’s Altezza is not modified it still stands out in a crowd of altezzas because of it being original and clean. It’s as clean now as the first day it came out of the factory, proof that Darren is a true Original JDM fan.
