Manifold jingle

Postby moomoo » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:43 pm

I've a HKS 4-1 Header/manifold that recently started to make a jingling rattling sound as if a coin had been dropped into it and was just moving around at certain revs.

I took the manifold off to see if something would fall out of it but it didnt, and there wasn't any noise if you shook it.

After putting it back on the car and before connecting it to the cat, I put a bar into the manifold and it hit something and stopped the noise (noise came back after removing bar  )

So is there some kind off plate/door inside the manifold thats stuck or broken?

Is your car a turbo? if so would say 100% it's your waste gate or actuator, had that same noise only at certain rev's on my gt-4 and found it to be the waste gate had play.
Could alsobe be a loose bolt/nut or washer and or heat shrink/sheild has come loose
hth

Not a turbo.

Doesnt make that noise with standard mainfold so fairly save assuming its the manifold and checked heat shield etc.

I've mine 4 years and its only recently that this started, there was always a slight noise but thought it was something else. Right now the car just sounds like a complete heap so was wondering whats inside them, like a plate or baffle or the like

Dont know the manifold, but some race style headers have springs holding the collectors together. They could have lost there strength and be vibrating at certain revs.

Have you been under the car or with the bonnet open and got someone to rev it in neutral to try help locate it? Its what I had to do to find a slightly bent heatshield that made a horrible noise at certain revs.

did you split the manifold apart at all ??
I've been looking at a few pics on the net and would of thought that you would be able to do a visual inspection with a touch on the insides to see if there is any problems inside

or

I would be checking all of the welds as 1 may have cracked.

or

just double check nothing is touching
