think my ball joint is gone ??

Postby Altezzahead » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:43 pm

Just a while ago I had to reverse onto a small rise of grass to get out and when i took my trip to the shop I noticed the steering wobbling at about 90kph , 3 years ago the same thing was happening and it turned out my front lower ball joints were gone.
I took off the 2 front wheels and on the left side I noticed alot of grease coming out of the seals on the ball joint and looks like a bigger gap than the other side .
Heres a photo that might give ye a better idea , and any thoughts would be welcome.
I think the heavy rain last few days just finished it off and was on the way out anyway. :(

IS there a knock or a grinding sound when you turn the wheel ?

With the info and by the looks of the pic, I'd say its gone. :?

Easy way of checking is jack up the side that you think is gone (Leave the wheel on) and then put a bar under the wheel and lift it u and let it down. . If you hear a knock thats a ball joint. . :?

it looks like it's gone from pic the way it's lying over....was it a spurious part.. :?: the roads are crap and they are hard on these parts on our cars...best to go with genuine parts last longer even if they work out that bit more...

It's hard to say when just looking at a pic like this but it doesn't look very healthy does it. Best thing to do is what damok already said and jack it up and use a pry bar or crow bar under the wheel and feel if there is any lift or movement.

If in doubt just replace them. There's only 0.9mm of play allowed in them

it´s a tie rod end on this picture. They are cheap and replace them both. Also count turns when removing. if puting new ones back on, do same amount of turns and you do not have to go to wheel alingment.

I have play in my front lower ball joints, 99 Toyota Altezza. Is this common? What's involved in fixing? And cost if you have any idea?
