perspective purcashe- down on power (BEAMS ENGINE GURUS )

Postby D1 RWD » Tue May 04, 2010 5:41 pm

ive been and viewed a tezza rs200 today and generally im fairly happy with it except it seems really down on power.

i saw the car from cold, it started first time on the button with no smoke, rattles etc etc.
however when you rev'd it up it seemed like the manifold gasket was blowing or maybe a cracked manifold (its got a stainless 4 branch mani - im guessing these are fairly well known for cracking ???)

it had all the tell tell signs, raspy/blowy rev sound, the fact its got an aftermarket manifold (which was lagged so i couldnt check for cracks) and it seemed very down on power. The owner also said it smelt a bit petrol'y and fume'y, so i guess its over fueling slightly and the fumes are circulating round the engine bay and into the car, hence the smell, he also said it lets out a little pop every now and again !!!!! which he thought would impress me......... just adds to my suspitions really.

it ran sweet otherwise, although its the 1st one ive driven so dont have a comparison, there was no nasty clonks/knocks the engine wa really quite, no rattles, smoke or hiss's and the gearbox and clutch both felt tight, its just been mot'd and only got an adviser for tyres/break pads.

IM JUST KEEN ON FINDING OUT THOUGH if the reason it is down on power maybe some thing more sinister ????? any help or info really appreciated

theres a number of reasons why the car could be down on power. Could be things like just in need of a good service fluids filters ect. maybe dirty sensors, poor fueling broken cat I think they only way you would find out is to dyno it (at your expense if the owner will let you before buying) or maybe get the car checked by some the owner will trust like the AA or RAC if that's possible and maybe do a compression check on the engine just to make sure the main mechanics of it are ok .

As for the manifold I used to have a TOM's 4-2-1 stainless steal performance manifold fitted which sounded quite raspy and when I first fitted it I thought it was blowing and even if it is cracked just weld it back up

there's probably a reason why the car is that price maybe it just needs a bit of tlc to bring it up to scratch or maybe the owner isn't telling you something.
Never know you may have a bargain with some love

Also if your used of turbo cars, u are probably going to find the Altezza down in power. My advise to anyone considering buying a Altezza is to drive a few none are the same power wise & I think a few dyno days have proved that.
