it should be something simple, maybe the MAF is gone or a coilpack or something.

probably the MAF. Is there any altezzas where you live that you could swap sensors with?

dont drive it if theres something wrong. thats how serious damage is done. may not be as bad as you think. does it not go past 4000rpm at all?

most modern cars come with a safe/limp mode which will stop any major damage being done, it will effectively just let the engine run but will stop you getting the performance out of the car
(this has been talked about in the last few months, try searching "safe mode")

even if you have cleaned the MAF sensor it could still be faulty so it could be the problem or part of the problem

did you say that the engine will rev freely above 4000rpm when the car is not in gear

is the car manual or auto

Coil packs, Im pretty sure it does go in safe mode, I may be wrong. I know in my Cally if the sensors go it gos into safe mode and wont go over 4000.

Any chance you could take a video & put it on youtube for us?

Really sounds like it'll be clutch or drivetrain related if its revving okay in neutral. Take it to good mechanic & get it looked at.

I'm with E910, I think it's the clutch or something in that direction too... take it in and let a mechanic have a look at it..
