Ticking sound at 3000RPM when car is under load...

Postby dhl_express83 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 6:20 pm

As the title suggests... I had a ticking sound coming from the rocker cover at 3000RPM under load and engine light came on... it went as soon as i eased off the gas... I dont think it was the valve lifters / tappets, because it only happens at 3000RPM around 50% throttle... I use Toyota 5W-30 and it's done almost 5,000KM. Oil still seems very clear and the level is as usual... any suggestion on the cause?

thanks... i will see if my mechanic can get an error code of the altezza... but it's likely that he may not have the correct tool... if it really was vvti, what would the possible cause be? bad oil? bad sensor?

yea... going to dealer would be the last resort... i just hope that it wasn't the vales that were making the sound... anyway... i will go to my mechanic and take the rocker cover and the head off to check out the valves... cheers...

I don't think the oil has anything to do with it, 5w-30 is the correct grade for the 3SGE.

For the engine light to be coming on it has to be something electrical. Maybe a VVT solenoid or a coil earthing out?

3000 rpm is also prime zone for knock, so if the engine light is flickering on and goes away as soon as throttle is lifted this could be your cause.

i very much agree with you... my knock level ranged between 15 - 40... the knock level only shoots up when i accelerate under load... however, what i have noticed lately is that i guess it is to do with my driving rather than the tune itself... i often use one gear higher than supposed to... ie 5th instead of 4th... and too lazy to change down when going up hill... when i keep the load low, knock level ranged between 14 - 30... it hasn't exceeded 35 for quite sometimes... so i hope this is the cause... rather than the engine itself...

What fuel do you use? Hopefully the highest octane available in your market.

Laboring your engine isn't good for it or the gearbox. Change gears!

98 Ron is the only type available in Hong Kong at the moment... and you are right, labouring the engine and the drive train is no good... i suppose i could retard the ignition timing for a few degrees to see if it has any impact too...
