Engine misfire, engine light on, TRC light flashes

Postby norwichphoto » Thu Feb 23, 2012 8:42 pm

OK 1999 Altezza RS200 manual - under 50,000kms on clock. Very little use for previous 8 years (was kind of expecting some teething troubles!)

Coming home tonight car lost power, probably about 15 minutes into journey.

Engine slow to pick up and feels as if its misfiring. No nasty noises from engine otherwise.

Check Engine Light came on, then TRC light started flashing and then fuel warning light flashed on (Halfway through a tank of fuel). ABS light isn't on.

All gauges read what I would expect. Oil clean.

Car has been converted to MPH, but speedo 'appears' to read normally

Earlier today the engine was as sweet as anything, no hesitancy, so its most probably a temperamental sensor but which one?

What does the collective expertise think it may be as I can then rule out likely items one by one. Top of my list are coils or plugs.

Is there a way of reading the error codes without a fancy code reader? My old Sera had a useful paperclip in the diagnostic port system and you'd look up how many times the CEL flashed on a chart.

Ideally need to get something resolved tomorrow as I was planning on going to the Race Retro show on Sunday, although I'll go in the wifes SportKa if necessary.

Probably what I'll have to do.

I know the two race spec SXE10 engines I have use a different ignition system - they have twin coils each serving two cylinders. The ignition system is a Magnetti Marelli system.

We do have some coil packs for a different spec Toyota 3S-GE F3 engine - will compare the part numbers just on the off chance they are the correct type (stranger things have happened)

Otherwise will phone around.

Correct part number is 90919-02236. Some sources say you can replace them with 90919-02239 which was used on the 1.8 MR2 and Celica as well as Yaris and Auris models. Other sources say you can't. Anyone know?

Yes some of the f3 engines were coil on Plug. My last car had 8 coils and 16 plugs!

Well the F3 coil on plugs used by TOMS in Japan in 2002-4 are different. Its definately a coil - I can see insides of coil on the outside. New from Toyota £ 88.86, be here tomorrow morning. Will give it new plugs as well.

Will check other coils as well.

It did feel like bad fuel, and had I just filled up I would have considered this.

14 months later another coil pack decides its had enough.

This one was harder to pin down, as visually it looked fine, but disconnecting each coil pack and fitting a temporary spark plug found one which didn't fire, and swapping that coil pack with another moved the problem, ruling out wiring harness.

Another coil pack arrived from Toyota next day and easily fitted. Two more of the original coils to go...
