Hey all,
After fitting my turbo there's a bad rattle in the engine. Other then fitting the turbo to the side i havnt touched the engine block itself other then replacing the oil (10-40 semi synthetic castrol magnatec). It doesnt rattle when idling but the second i put my foot on the throttle its there. Need to get it tuned but with that problem there's no point. Can anyone please help? Even suggestions are more useful then i have.
Thanks, Matt

How much boost you running? Did this rattle start right after you started up the car for the first time after installing the turbo? Or did you drive it around a bit? sounds like your bottom end is gone... got a vid of it?

Sounds like something in the block has gone.
You really should not have driven the car without a tune. Was it an N/A before? How much boost were you running?
Also these engines run better on a 5 weight oil.

it was absolutely fine before the turbo went on. Only started after the turbo was fitted. It wasn't running any boost at all and isn't now.
What do you mean something in the bottom has gone? I'll try and get a vid when i pick it up from the tuning place (Horshem Developments) I truly hope this isnt going to cost me as much as it sounds :/

Just spoke with the tuning place and they've been reading a lot into it. They reckon its possibly the vvti. Does anyone here think that could be a possibility? Or has anyone had a faulty vvti and heard a rattling noise?

VVTi solenoid?
VVTi solenoid shouldn't rattle, in fact I've never heard of the VVTi rattling at all.
What injectors are you running? Have heard of injectors kind of rattling before?

everything else engine wise is standard minus the turbo kit. Im only running it at .5 boost for now and later make more upgrades. As for the solenoid i haven't a clue until 9am tomorrow :/ The rattle doesnt sound like something has broken ff and is flying around in there. I'll post another update when i see the car for myself.
Starting to wish i left it alone now!

Right the update!
I got the car back now and the rattle starts as you put your foot on the throttle. It stops as it revs up but when you take your foot off the throttle and the revs die down to 2000 ish the rattle comes back. It seems the rattle is at the top of the engine towards the back. Any ideas from here?

Which area is the noise coming from?
Try using a screw driver with your ear against it to see where the noise is coming from.

I'd get the magnatec out of there to start with. It's not great oil to begin with & isn't recommended for turbo use. Get some synthetic 5w-40 like Mobil1 or Shell Helix Ultra. With that lower boost you could still also run a decent 5w-30. Have you looked at the throttle body? You didn't damage it or put it back on incorrectly. Could the workshop you took it to not identify it? Did they rule out it being a tappet noise? VVT cam gears also rattle, we see it lots on the 2GRFE. Not so common on the 3SGE though.

I used the screwdriver to find out the noise is at the top of the engine block at the back. Thank you The workshop i took it to was a nissan specialist but it was close by. They werent really happy working with the tezz. No they didnt want to take it apart as it would be pricey so did some research and they though it was the VVT. Iv had a few people say it could be the tappets but the garage said it doesnt sound like tappet noise. Then again they didnt check hard so i wont rule it out. I'll drain the oil again and see if it helps at all. I dont think i damaged the throttle body, To be honest i barely touched it.

Is it a GReddy turbo kit you have? With a metal guard over your exhaust housing on the turbo? If so they can make a horrible rattling noise at those revs, just need to be bent out the way, or replaced with a turbo beanie if that is the case.
Hopefully it's something nice and simple like that, but you really shouldnt have hit any boost if the car is untuned, sure fire way to kill an engine.
VVT-i solenoids if stuffed can rattle, and mine even went to the extreme case of throwing oil everywhere. So it is something to look at. (Edit not so likely if it's at the back of the block)
Edit: Just read your last post, sounds like it could be something with the valves, I dropped a collet on the dyno while being tuned but didn't drive it all afterwards due to fear of smashing a piston.
