I want to buy a reader, but want to know before I do

out of curiousity what is the diagnostic port under the bonnet next to the ecu?

the one under the bonnet is the old dlc (diagnostic link connector) that can be used as a flasher code reader by shorting specific terminals.
the one by your right knee in a rhd car is called dlc3 and is standard fare on pretty much all cars produced after 1997 apart from nissan and vag cars.
