Not so handy handbrake!!

Postby r3volut1on » Thu Jan 31, 2008 6:42 pm

Hi guys,

Our dodgy Toyota dealers in Malawi assure me that my handbrake is "electronic" ?? When driving, i can yank the handbrake up and all the car does is sound a beeper in the dash but doesnt grip.. However when i park the car and turn it off, the handbrake grips like it should. Is this normal? I was told the Tezzas are good drift cars and i cant imagine how anyone would drift without a handbrake!

Hi Dan,

Nope, my car is the 6-shot Manual...
Every other car i owned stops dead in its tracks when you pull the handbrake - ie handbrake turn - but on the tezza, no matter what speed i do, if i'm moving forward, the handbrake will not stop the car, a buzzer will make a noise in the dash instead. The only time the handbrake will work is when the car is stationary...
Its really confusing me coz i can't understand how people would drift these tezzas if the handbrake doesnt grip when you're moving... confuses me even more when i sit and look at the Supra 2JZ-GTE Twin-Turbo Engine i have sitting in my garage waiting to be transplanted into this beast...........

is it possible that either your handbrake cable is way to slack.so when you pull up the handbrake at speed it just cant stop the car enough, but when stationery it has just enough to stop the car moving.. When i pull up my handbrake and lock the steering wheel, the car goes around and around and around and around........ 8)

Sounds like that could be the problem, will get it sorted this week coz my rear brake pads and release bearing arrived after 12 weeks of waiting, yippee!! hope checking the cable will sort it, coz the first time i found out it didnt grip at speed, i nearly ended up in a supermarket, hehehe!

Now all i gotta do is find out how to put that 2JZ-GTE lump in the Tezza and i can give that cheeky Toyota curren a good hiding!

The handbrake mechanism in the rear disc brake hubs is the best place to adjust.. theres a small pair of brake shoes in there that come on when you apply the handbrake. Also it won't lock up the rear wheels if you don't clutch it when applying the H/brake at speed/moving.

Ya sorry there Shakey, what I meant-- driving at speed, and just pull the handbrake the wheels shouldn't lock up unless you clutch it aswell..
If you don't clutch, either the engine will stall or if your giving it plenty then then you might burn the bollx out of the handbrake shoes.
BTW.. hope you got plenty of room when you pull the handbrake at "..high speed.." A mate of mine did that in Mk2 Escort years ago doing about 60 on a country road.. He walked away but the car wasn't a pretty sight after :?

my tezza has the same problem with the e-brake. i just get a "ding" and it won't lock up the rears... i do feel it slowing me down though so i'm just suspecting it's the shoes in the rear drums... shakey i hope u don't pull the e-brake without sinking the clutch too often cuz ure putting your drivetrain at a lot of stress.
