from citizens information:
Careless driving: This is defined as 'driving a vehicle in a public place without due care and attention'. The Gardai enforce careless driving offences and this involves a mandatory court appearance. From 4th June 2004, a driver charged and subsequently found guilty of careless driving will receive 5 penalty points on their licence. Drivers may also be fined up to a maximum of 1,500 euro, or given a prison sentence to a maximum of 3 months. (You should note the courts also have discretion to impose both the 1,500 euro fine and the 3 month prison sentence together).
hope this helps

I kicked my mates 180 out last year got caught and was being done for wreckless and dangerous got a solicitor pleaded not guilty saying i didnt mean 2 do it cos i was not use 2 the car and it was wet out.. after 3 trips 2 court 3 days missed from work not paid ended up with a 400euro fine and a 400 solicitors fee.. My advice go not guilty all the way theres no way in hell gaurds can prove u ment 2 do it, if u go guilty u will get away with the fine and b slapped with 5 points.
The way forward is sideways..

good advice lads but this patwell is notorious for comin down hard for driving offences and i mean hard..i was up before him last year for dangerous drivin but got away wit it coz it was all fabricated bullshit and someone tryin to stitch me up..my advice plead not guilty its your evidence against the guard and if its under oath he cant contradict it..jus play dumb,u didnt know the car was gonna do that..
sorry guard i got here as quick as i could!!

He he he i was up on no insurance 4 years ago when i had my golf i said i had only bought the car up north that it was parked in my garden and i only took it our to go the shops for milk, truth was i was driving around in it for a forthnight waiting to get the cash upfront for a discount on the price for insurance

Got away with it so to speak didnt get penelty points just the probation act though i made a 1000 euro donation to charity so id look good to the judge

not guilty all the way man. a friend of mine in court two weeks ago said he was guilty . only got two penalty points from the judge but for going to court about it he got an extra 2 points and had to pay witness fees. ended up wit 4 points instead of 5. not wort it for 1 point . just say u didnt mean to do it and stick to that.
