How to paint the tailights (with pictures)

Postby beltofawetfish » Tue Jun 01, 2010 10:57 pm

When doing the tailights have patience, if not your going to crack a lens and make a bags of this job!!!
Slowly cut using a dremel tool with a very thin blade in between the light lens and the housing as shown in the picture below.
When this is done run a stanley knife along where you have cut to make sure you have cut right through the plastic the whole way around otherwise if you try pull it apart you may crack the lens. Once the lens is removed you need to remove the insert from the housing so get a flat head screw driver and at each corner of the insert try and gently pry the insert out as there are clip like parts on the back of the insert. Then with that done the insert will just pull away from the housing. Id reccomend removing the red lens as it takes a few seconds to unclip when your gone this far. Now all you need to do is give the insert 2 coats of plastic primer, when this is dry you can start applying light coats of some paint (i used matt black). I found 2 coats was plenty on mine. Let these dry and then you need to put everything back together. Use some silicone or sealer of your choice to seal the lens back to the housing, i used clear silicone and it sealed well and theres no leaks getting in. **Please take your time so as not to crack the lens as it can be easily cracked**

Nice ''How To''! :) Great finish....................
I was half thinking of trying this but going car colour instead of black, white in my case. Might try and get a third light to test on :?

Cheers I thought id make the effort and give good details and pictures for anyone else to have a go. The orange light is just the bulb or maybe the reflective lens in the middle of the brake light. @ anto, I'm consider startin a business in doing tailights and headlights for people dont know how long it'd last though
