Re: Engine Knocking! :( Big End Bearing!

Have you removed the con rod from the crank yet? You'll be incredibly lucky if the crank doesn't need a regrind and then you will need over sized bearings anyway. The Altezza bearings have different part numbers to the celica bearings, and there also different numbers for early and late model year A...

black007 wrote:Why would you steer clear of the HKS? Because oiled foam and a MAF sensor?

Because if it's the same green foam as in their mushroom filters, it will be utterly useless at filtering.

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

Does anyone know if there is/can be an oil starvation issue in that area? Do I need to checking or looking at oil pump too? Also can ask for a few other bits of information please? Does anyone know if the bottom end of the earlier gen 3S-GE (in Celica or MR2) is the same or if they share the same p...

Re: Good Panel Filter?

K&N do a panel filter that fits the standard air box. Part number is 33-2170. Personally, I wouldn't touch a HKS air filter.

Re: Engine oil?

Personally, I'd only mix different grades of the same flavour of oil. Who knows how the different additives and detergents will react with each other? Chances are it'd probably be ok, but why take that chance?

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

Have you had the engine oil analysed yet? Do that first, certainly before you take off the head, and probably the sump as well. If it isn't the VVTI (and it seems not, from what you've deduced so far), then bottom end bearing is most likely. I certainly wouldn't pull the head off until you've elimin...

Re: Engine oil?

Asda have had Castrol Edge 5w-30 on offer in store recently, think I paid £30 per 4l pot. But I know oil is the least of your worries at present!

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

There's no oil pressure when the engine isn't running.

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

The 4a-ge one is definitely the most similar to the 3s-ge (they both have a spring in them), this is what its parts look like: http://forum.9000rpm.co.za/viewtopic.php?id=3161 This page has photos; of the 3s-ge vvti intake pulley internals: http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=91467 And a (...

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

Yes that's true oil pressure regulator. It won't be the problem though, definitely couldn't make that noise, and it it was faulty you'd have bad oil pressure - too high or too low.

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

The altezza pulley is no more complicated than the 2jz one, in fact I'd say it's less complicated as it only appears to have a single helical mechanism. Toyota say that neither of them can be rebuilt, but it's clearly possible to in both cases (with care, and knowledge). Photo's of an actual altezza...

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

I didn't take any pics unfortunately. Was top busy trying to make sure I rebuilt it properly lol both pulleys are locked to the cam otherwise you wouldn't be able to time it, you would have to time it by measuring love position and crank position. Altezza vvti, from what I read is constantly variab...

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

I did just write a huge post about the vvti and then my browser crashed and lost it. :x Anyway they gist of it is that the bloke on th NZ forum is basing his statement of the cams moving freely on the 2jz vvti, which is different from the 3s-ge vvti (inlet at least), as it doesn't have a spring in i...

Re: Engine Knocking/Rattle! :(

Actually, having looked at those photos (on the link above), and the vvti solenoid wiring, the solenoid is only 1 way. Most Toyota vvti solenoids seem to be 2 way (and infinitely variable). I suspect the 3s-ge beams is basically a two position (fully advanced or fully retarded), oil pressure sends i...
